Wei is the smallest unit of Ether. One Ether equals 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 wei (10^18 wei). Wei is named after Wei Dai, a cryptographer who contributed to early cryptocurrency concepts. He developed bmoney, which laid the groundwork for smart contracts.

With the London Hard Fork in July 2021, EIP-1559 introduced a base-fee system for transactions, with optional tips to prioritize transactions.
